Easton Monthly Shenandoah Singing
Join us on the Eastern Shore! We meet most Second Saturdays / 2-5pm and sing from The Shenandoah Harmony, a four part shape-note tunebook. Characterized by open harmonies and a raw, powerful sound, these tunes speak of death and love and powerful forces. All are welcome to join us–Come and sing!
What to expect at our singing
We sing for each other and the joy of singing. This music is designed for participation, rather than performance. There is no audience and no director, and we take turns choosing songs and leading the group (and it’s fine to pass your turn, too). We are a small-but-mighty local community, and wide-ranging in terms of ages, religious beliefs/affiliations (or lack thereof), and reasons for singing. The harmony and egalitarian approach in this living music tradition unites us.
For the first session (Usually 2pm-2:45 or so), we take our time to welcome newcomers and introduce the songs and the style. In this portion, we’ll go a bit slower, singing through individual parts and answering questions as they arise.
After a short break for snacks and to get to know each other, we come back and sing until 5pm, with at least one more break. The pace feels more like a traditional singing, moving from one tune to the next in a deliberate fashion, so everyone can lead as many times as possible.
Come and sing!
